History

In 1884, Thomas G.Daniels and his wife, Mary Frances Bugbee Daniels, platted and recorded 6 blocks from their farm to make up the village of Lochiel. Five years later in 1889, John Kaar platted 4 more blocks adding it to Lochiel on the west side.

John Kaar was an enterprising individual and rebuilt. He also owned a brick factory and sorghum factory, in addition to owning the grain elevator. In the early 20th century, after many years in business, he sold the north part of his farm and his grain elevator to O.Barnard and left Lochiel. After the death of O. Barnard, his son Guy became the sole owner of the elevator until 1919, when it sold to Lochiel Farmers Elevator Co. Joe Stone worked as house man and manager until death in 1942. He was replaced by Eldred Greenburg. Fire destroyed the elevator in 1970 to its present owners, Demeter.

During the late 19th century some of the other businesses were: two blacksmith shops, a dry goods store with groceries, a second grocery store, a post office and telephone exchange.

With the help of his neighbors, a farmer drove his stick from his farm along the country roads to the stock yards in Lochiel, where the stock was loaded onto railroad cars. The Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad ran through Lochiel and was built in the early 19th century. It was abandoned in 1946.

A Methodist church stood at the east end of Lochiel. It was built in the latter part of 1896 with bricks made at Lochiel. The building was torn down in 1917, with some of the materials being used in the Fowler Methodist Church.

The grain elevator is the only remaining business in Lochiel, along with residents Mrs. Demmos Moore and the Lloyd Hall family.
